Selective Catheterization IVR coding

What does selective catheterization mean in IVR coding?

In IVR coding, selective catheterization is defined as introduction of a catheter into an artery and then navigating it beyond aorta. If the catheter remains into aorta and not navigated beyond aorta, then it still is considered as non selective catheterization. Hence the condition for selective catheterization is that the catheter should cross aorta or any vessel bifurcation.

For example if catheter is inserted at right superficial femoral artery and then navigated into right common iliac and into abdominal aorta, this is an example of non selective catheterization. If the catheter is further navigated into left common iliac then it becomes selective as the catheter tip has crossed aorta.

In case of venous system, the catheter should cross the superior or inferior venacava.
